Karin B. Refos

Karin Refos is a Senior “Branding” and Communication expert and the founder of STAS International, Strategic Communication and “Branding” (www.stasinternational.com). STAS is currently the strategic authority on communication and branding in Suriname. After studying Public Relations and Information as well as Pedagogy at the Free University in Amsterdam, she completed a range of post – HBO trainings such as: Political Lobby Strategies, Policy and Project Development as well as Personal Leadership. She held the position of Director of Minority Policy for the Province of Flevoland in the Netherlands and was appointed by the respective governments of the Netherlands Antilles, Aruba and Suriname as the Regional Gender Policy Coordinator for this Dutch -speaking Caribbean region. Karin Refos has led several institutes on behalf of the respective governments and initiated and coordinated their corresponding high-profile national (awareness-raising) campaigns at among others:

  1. the establishment of the Bureau of Gender Policy in Suriname and Aruba, in addition to 3 regional conferences.
  2. the establishment of the Bureau of Children’s Rights and, among other things, the campaign “Violence against Children, A no kan!”
  3. the establishment of the National School of Music for the People;
  4. the breast cancer campaign and the establishment of the Pink Ribbon Suriname Foundation;
  5. in relation to Free and Secret Elections in Suriname: the national conference Women in Leadership in 2000, the “OOK ZIJ” campaign for More Female Leadership in decision-making in 2015 and the “Balans in 2020” campaign for more women and youth in politics.

She is a well known and in demand “motivational speaker” on the subject of Ethical Personal Leadership as well as “Personal Branding” and was named Communication Personality of 2016. Karin is the mother of two children: Kenzo, Creative Director of STAS International (www.stasinternational.com) and Dayle, Artist and Psychologist (www.hiddendivine.nl).

“I soon discovered that all the projects I initiate and coordinate out of passion are related to human rights; whether it’s racial equality, gender, religion, sexual orientation or children’s rights.”

More Women in Decision Making
Upon her remigration to Suriname in 1996, the STAS Caribe Foundation was designated by the respective governments of the Dutch-speaking Caribbean as the regional coordinator of Gender Policy.

Children's Rights
Karin Refos joined the Children's Rights Mediaboard initiated by Robert Wijdenbosch to be able to raise a number of Children's Rights issues and launch national awareness campaigns under its auspices.

Youth Policy
An evaluation of a malfunctioning then National Youth Council resulted in the national organization and creation of the Youth Parliament, with funding from the Inter-American Development Bank. Together with then Director of Youth Affairs, Richenel Trustfull, a whole new push was given to Youth Policy.

National Music School of the People
After a thorough renovation, financed by funds raised by the Mediaboard for Children's Rights, the National Music School was opened in grand fashion on March 6, 2006. Many Surinamese artists, as well as other dignitaries and Surinamese people who cared about the school, donated their Art to this Institute.

Pink Ribbon Suriname
In June 2010, Karin Refos was diagnosed with breast cancer. Because radiation treatment was not possible in Suriname, she spent 3 months in Curacao. Further treatment took place in Suriname. In 2011, she launched the Pink Ribbon Campaign to break the taboo surrounding breast cancer.

Couleur Internationale
(Image Building, Style Counseling, Protocol and Etiquette)
After emigrating to Aruba in 1992, she partnered with MAGGY'S, the largest Perfume and Make-Up house in Orange City, under the name COULEUR INTERNATIONALE. The cooperation resulted in “ MAGGY'S COULEUR INTERNATIONALE”, a Make-Up and Visage Institute, which operated successfully for years.
